Wine | Mastrojanni
The Azienda Agricola Mastrojanni is a family business founded in 1975. The family holds just over 90 hectares of rolling and gentle Tuscan hills, of which 24 hectares are devoted to vineyards. The land is located in the southeast corner of the famous DOCG Montalcino zone of Tuscany, where the Asso flows into the Orcia River.
The soil and climate is influenced by an extinct volcano, the nearby Mount Amiata. The stony soil is rich in gravel, clay and limestone, which is complemented by the plentiful sunshine guaranteed by the south-eastern exposure.
In 2008, a number of years after founding Mastrojanni had passed away, his children decided to sell the estate to the Illy family (famous for their global brand of coffee). Today they continue the tradition started by the venerable Mastrojanni family.
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG
Brunello is the name for the strain of Sangiovese that is grown in the vineyards surrounding Montalcino in Toscana. Brunello di Montalcino is the youngest of Italy's most prestigious red wines and is made from an isolated clone of Sangiovese called Sangiovese Grosso.
The area of Montalcino is the most arid of all the Tuscan DOCG zones. Total ageing necessary for a Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is 48 months. It is, without question, the most prestigious of Tuscany's noble wines.
VIGNA SCHIENA D’ASINO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG
A flagship Brunello made from the single vineyard called Schiena d'Asino in Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the south-east area of Montalcino. Full and robust with wide sweeping flavours of spice, black cherry and earth. Awarded Tre Bicchieri – Gambero Rosso 2014.
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO DOC
In 1984, the Rosso di Montalcino DOC was established to allow winemakers to offer a product in between the lengthy ageing periods necessary for the region's flagship wine, Brunello di Montalcino.
The wine is still made from the same grape, Sangiovese Grosso, grown in the same zone, however it is given significantly less time in oak and in bottle prior to release.
Declassified Brunello can also find its way into Rosso di Montalcino wines and they tend to be lighter, fresher and more approachable at an earlier stage.
SAN PIO CABERNET SAUVIGNON SANGIOVESE IGT
20% Sangiovese Grosso and 80% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 18 months in French oak tonneau and small barrels followed by 6 months in bottle. Broad and persistent flavours of deep fruit and jam with hints of vanilla.
