Almost one-third of Australian drinkers have regretted a drunk-dial or a tipsy text in the past year, a poll shows.
Among generation Y the proportion rises to almost half.
This includes sending an inebriated email, posting on social media or uploading a photo while blotto.
Young drinkers are more likely to do something they regret, but older people are not immune.
Fifteen per cent of drinkers over 50 admitted to indulging in an ill-advised phone call or email after they had had a few drinks, the study of alcohol attitudes and behaviour found.
Caterina Giorgi, policy manager for study author the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, said people were most likely to regret behaviours in the medium they were most comfortable with.
"There were more young people (18 to 24) posting a comment or photo, with 18 per cent for each," she said.
"We saw more people in late gen Y or early gen X saying they regretted sending a text message or making a phone call."
She said no baby boomers (50-plus) regretted posting a comment on social media.
However, one per cent of people in the 50-plus age bracket had regretted posting a photo online in a haze of drunkenness.
